What are your guys' BJJ/Judo gyms like is it a pretty laid back environment? Are the people you roll with friends?

Kind of. My coworker has been training BJJ for about four years and I have always wanted to get into some martial art. He introduced me to the gym and the instructors and joined last October and have been training with him and that gym since.

Thanks for keeping this thread semi-active guys.

I started a new job this week, so I've been busy. Hope all is well with jsp's grapplers!

Yep. Our gym is very laid back and all of the core guys, I consider friends outside the gym.

Like I have said before; My friend is a purple belt and he sometimes will teach class and I usually get privates from him.

Some people make GREAT teachers and some don't. I'm sure that there are a lot of black belts out there that simply don't care to teach or are just terrible at it.

That's how one of the brown belts is at the gym. We will start class by "practice your throws" or "work from guard"

That's a good activity to do, but I hate doing that at the start of class!

Hey guys I just tried the rubber guard today on my buddy and realized for the first time it's effectiveness in MMA I completely had broken my buddy down and trapped his head I could also strike his head very easily from that position which would be very useful in MMA buuut I am confused as to how to set up submissions from the area, I tried to go for a triangle but it's so awkward which submissions can you get from the rubber guard are there any submissions that will flow better than the triangle choke which for some reason is very awkward to get from that position for me. I don't take BJJ or anything so I can't go to a coach for it.

For reference who says.

GEW GEW PLATA

or

GO GO PLATA

I've heard both.

I've heard the latter. Never heard the former.

Of course, I don't know any native Greek speakers, either, so we might be butchering the pronounciation. ;)
