ya it said they were going to release on wii but with wiiu in development they didnt have room for on top everything else

friend codes might not be gone with Wii U, but they will be improved.

The new console won't be out until next year so there's still a fair amount of time to sort things out. If Nintendo truly is serious about making online better, you'd hope that it starts talking about it soon rather than waiting and simply saying that you can "check that box" in the meantime.
