Oh okay. Is he a truck guy or something?

Also, I've been dealing a Lot with duramax's lately, and I can tell you it Is worth the extra money. When I said run it to a million miles and rebuild, I wasn't kidding.

Getting ready to drop one in my Chevelle actually =P

thanks for the replies guys, but this was pretty much addressed to LSD :P

from what I'm reading, its saying slightly older 6.6s get better mileage due to new emissions restrictions.
i'm not opposed to an older truck, i have a soft spot for a golden workhorse with a beater body
what years have had the least problems/best record?

It's looking like this so far:

2004~ Silverado 2500HD w/ 6.6 duramax + allison, 4wd, 100-160k miles = $20k
2004~ Silverado 2500HD w/ 6.0 vortec, 4wd, 75-100kmiles = $13k

I really like the reliability of the allison + diesel combo, but will it last long enough to be worth the extra dough?

my uncles got a 1500 hd with 6.0 vortec 2wd and hes near his 2nd tranny rebuild at only 100k
hes hard on things, and he probably abused it a bit but it dont change the fact
id go for the diesel

That truck has a 4L80E trans. It should handle anything he can throw at it that the 6.0 is rated to pull. They are very strong and very reliable transmissions. When swapped into a car they hold 700rwhp in bone stock form. He is most likely doing something that falls under user negligence or abuse. If it was a 4L60E equipped truck it would be a different story.

i would go with the duramax. hauling heavier payloads is a lot easier on a diesel than a gas because they have a lot higher torque than gas. in towing torque > horsepower. also the allison is a good transmission and you shouldnt have any problems with wearing it out. you wont be making the power my cummins has but a mere pickup truck never does :P

pretty sure you mean a 2500 not 1500. also dont use biodiesel blends if you can help it you get worse fuel mileage with them.

friends dad has a 2005 duramax 2500hd with 130k miles on it, never had anything other than oil changes AFAIK, was used for about 2 years to tow a decent sized personal fishing boat (with a cabin andd all that), commonly drives it from WA to Montanna, which means mountain passes and lots of miles

he is careful with it, he doesnt mash on the gas and takes really good care of it, but its been a fantastic truck for him too
