dude what the fuck you are only towing shit under 2k pounds why are considering either of these what a horrendous waste of money my 93 k1500 tows up to 10k without a problem

im not towing anything, im hauling 2k. 2k in the bed is different than 2k on a trailer.

my current trucks are suffering from carrying 1200, I want a truck that can do it easily.

my debate is whether ill save enough gas and have a longer lasting truck to be worth the money of going diesel

does it have to be GM?

Dodge 2500 with a 5.9L would be the best option when it comes to diesel trucks.

but to answer your question, the duramax is better than the vortec when it comes to payloads.

doesn't necessarily have to be GM, no.
I'm open to the best ratio of reliability + longevity vs cost to own (initial and long term)

My mind is open, tell me why I should by a dodge/ford/chevy over one or the other

Personally, I would buy a nice 7.3 powerstroke, it's just as reliable and has just as much potential as a 12v but its in a ford instead of a pos dodge.

If your going to take your truck off road and such and put a little beating on it i'd stay away from chevy's, solid front axel> IFS.

vouch

dodge's warranties blow, because their chassis rust out within 5 years and they could care less.

imo:

ford > chevy > toyota > dodge

I see that does make a considerable difference what exactly is your payload?

also personally I would go for the 8.1 liter big block because I like the torque, the warranty, and how I don't have to drive around trying to find a gas station with diesel every time I need to fuel up

get the duramax, it may be more expensive now but in the long run its what you want and when your dropping that much on a new truck i wouldnt compromise on anything

seeing how hes probably not buying a brand new dodge warranty doesnt matter does it? Cummins makes the best diesel engines hands down. out of every diesel manufacture in the world.... Cummins beats them.

a 12v or a 24v with a 6 speed manual will last you a life time if you play your cards right and take care of it. now the automatic trans is a different story.

if you're going to go with a ford, you have to get a 7.3L international motor. the 6.0L is an epic fail of EGR, turbo problems, oil leaks, coolant leaks and many more. the 6.4LTT is even worse, and i have no idea about these new powerstroke that just came out in may.
