billy cobham is a beast, he's one of my favorite drummers and i think ive recommended him a couple times actually :p

my jazz is limited to essentially this: miles davis, john coltrane, the dave brubeck quartet, mahavishnu orchestra [and soon to be herbie hancock and return to forever]

Check out Stan Kenton, too. His early work is mostly big-band, Glenn Miller / Duke Ellington style, however, in the late-60s and early to mid 70s, he put out some nice fusion records that are unbelievable.
If you can, obtain "Kenton '76" and "Journey into Capricorn"

Edit: Also check out Maynard Ferguson. Best trumpet player ever.

this was good stuff but an odd recommendation from you :D the video gave me a strong hives vibe

A friend of mine shared it with me and I liked it (and I've posted it on my SotD), too bad I haven't been able to find the album anywhere. They just recently got onto a western publisher and the album is coming out in April.

Another recommendation I'd give is Murder By Death if you are not already familiar with them.
