Someone who weighs 170 pounds...what is the calorie count needed to maintain that weight? If assuming they want to cut they would need a 500 deficit correct?

500 below is cutting
maintaining would be anywhere between 100 below or above bmr+exercise
bulking is 500 above

There aren't any other issues besides cardiovascular/cancer/etc. In other words they have no impact on your muscle gains or fat losses. Many bodybuilders smoke...such as markus ruhl.

I do not advise it for your overall health.

According to that calculator it says a person under that weight will need 1600 calories to maintain. That seems extremely low.

My friend is about 5'8 170 he's realtively lean except hes having issues getting the abs to really come out. So he's trying like crazy to drop bf. Would you suggest a calorie count of that for someone in his position? To me that seems odd I guess.

what? First of all no it does not.

When I plug in 5'8 170 male 21 yrs old, I get 1845.9.

Also this is BASE BMR.

It does not include exercise. You must then calculate daily exercise expenditures. Figure you burn approx 500 cals per hour of EXTREMELY INTENSE physical activity...something like hypertrophy, 5x5, etc.

So if he does 1 hr of really intense exercise per day and 20-30 mins of HIIT cardio, he can expect to be burning around 750 cals a day from exercise. Add that to the 1850 and you get 2,600 cals for maintenance.

edit: for cutting he would go 500 under that...so 2,100.
