D3 developers did things this way to encourage that solo aspect. Me as a player, the want to do things in a D2 single player style. To invest in doing the climb and adventure on your own. It's time consuming and much more fun for me. I enjoy that type of RPG. But that type of rpg is an acquired taste to the diablo community. If this game wasn't named Diablo, I gurantee you it would be different for some of these fans that hate it.
Trading is still a thing in D3, it may not come close to the "real thing" as you put it, but it is a real thing in D3, just done completely different.
It's done so different that it made it so the game doesn't have an economy. Which is a huge aspect of aRPGs and the Diablo series. It also has a pretty large fun factor to it. All of that is stripped away from the player.
For example, finding an item that's worth a lot, but it's not a gear piece. You could sell it for something else, then buy that upgrade for your character. Path of Exile does this very well (1 example: Chaos Orbs). All about character customization and the feeling of building up "wealth". That's very important in the aRPG genre and a core value Brevik and Shaefer have talked about. It's not there in D3.
