Will never happen.

I hope it doesn't. the US and Australia are allies, and share a lot of information.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Chinese government hackers who compromised the computers of a U.S. Navy contractor stole a large amount of highly sensitive data on undersea warfare, including plans for a supersonic anti-ship missile for use on U.S. submarines, the Washington Post reported on Friday, citing unnamed U.S. officials.

The breaches took place in January and February, the officials told the Post, speaking on condition of anonymity about an ongoing investigation. The hackers targeted a contractor who works for the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, a military entity based in Newport, Rhode Island, they said without identifying the contractor, according to the Post.

Kinda weird. First it's NK is bad, China is good. Now it's NK is good, China is bad.

/e It's almost like the two are... working together.

Chinese ambassador calls on Australia to drop 'Cold War mentality'

Australian security agencies and Huawei have clashed over worries that the telco’s desire to supply hardware for Australia’s nascent 5G network poses a data safety risk.

Australia has already blocked Huawei from providing broadband equipment to its national network over national security concerns and stymied its plan to lay an internet cable from the Solomon Islands, north of Australia, to Sydney.

Bishop raised concerns that Chinese lending in the Pacific undermined the sovereignty of the small countries taking the money, and flagged Australia could push back at Chinese infrastructure construction on those islands.

“We’re concerned that the consequences of entering into some of these financing arrangements will be detrimental to their long-term sovereignty,” Bishop said in the Herald interview.

“We want to ensure that they retain their sovereignty, that they have sustainable economies and that they are not trapped into unsustainable debt outcomes. The trap can then be a debt-for-equity swap and they have lost their sovereignty,” she said.

Xi says China must lead way in reform of global governance

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-diplomacy/xi-says-china-must-lead-way-in-reform-of-global-governance-idUSKBN1JJ0GT

BEIJING (Reuters) - China must lead the way in reforming global governance, the foreign ministry on Saturday cited President Xi Jinping as saying, as Beijing looks to increase its world influence.

China has sought a greater say in global organizations such as the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and United Nations, in line with its growing economic and diplomatic clout.

Since taking office in late 2012, Xi has taken a more muscular approach, setting up China’s own global bodies like the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and launching his landmark Belt and Road project to build a new Silk Road.

This has the potential to be a problem. I guess it all depends on whether China wants to play peacefully in the big league or not. Or, for how long they want to play peacefully.
This buying up of little countries, that's been going on has an unwholesome imperialist ring to it. Wouldn't be half bad from a global perspective if China wasn't a communist country.

Sure would be nice if we could unite the world to put pressure on China to initiate government reforms.

Too bad that requires diplomacy and soft power, which we have basically given up on.

Australia to pass foreign interference bill amid tensions with China

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-australia-security-review-china/australia-to-pass-foreign-interference-bill-amid-tensions-with-china-idUSKBN1JN0BY

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australia is expected to pass new legislation on Wednesday aimed at preventing interference by foreign governments, a move likely to further stoke tensions with major trading partner China.

Mirroring similar laws in the United States, Australia’s Foreign Influence Transparency Scheme requires lobbyists working for foreign countries to register as foreign agents, who could also face criminal prosecution if they are deemed to be meddling in Canberra’s affairs.

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull last year referred to “disturbing reports about Chinese influence” as justification for the bill, which has strained diplomatic and trade ties with China.

I gotta admit, this Turnbull guy, has it together as far as I've seen.

In Europe's east, a border town strains under China's Silk Road train boom

This would bother me, if I was in the EU. I would ask China to tone it down.

Japan picks Lockheed Martin radar for missile defense system: ministry official

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-japan-defence-aegis/japan-picks-lockheed-martin-radar-for-missile-defense-system-ministry-official-idUSKBN1JT012

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan has selected Lockheed Martin Corp’s advanced radar for its multibillion-dollar missile defense system, a Japanese defense ministry official with direct knowledge told Reuters on Tuesday on condition of anonymity.

Japan plans to buy two Aegis Ashore batteries that it wants to deploy in 2023 in an upgrade of its missile defense system that could help ease trade friction with Washington and provide cutting-edge protection against the arsenals of North Korea and China.

Reuters reported last week that the candidates for the radar were Raytheon Co’s SPY-6 and a version of Lockheed Martin Long Range Discrimination Radar (LRDR).

The decision on the radar supplier means that Japan can add the purchase to a defense budget proposal slated for release in August, three sources with knowledge of the plan told Reuters previously. They also spoke on condition on anonymity.

The Japanese budget proposal comes amid an easing of regional tensions after the June 12 meeting in Singapore between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Japanese military planners still see North Korea as an immediate danger, but they view China’s growing military power as a bigger long-term threat.

The Japanese defense official said that Lockheed’s radar had been selected due to its search capabilities and lifecycle costs, among other factors.
