U.S. House panel to probe China military footprint in Africa: chairman

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-china-nunes/u-s-house-panel-to-probe-china-military-footprint-in-africa-chairman-idUSKBN1H10RV

Quote
Nunes cited China’s opening last summer of a military base in Djibouti, in the Horn of Africa and at the entrance of Red Sea, as an example of how Beijing is jockeying to assert power of trade.

“We believe they are looking at investing in ports and infrastructure around the world, not just for military capabilities but also to control those governments,” Nunes said.

When it was just the South China Sea, it was one thing. When it was just Xi, ruler for life it was another thing.
But now it seems that China is starting to make some serious moves on the old "RISK" board.

If it is just about trade, that would be bad enough. I have the feeling it's gonna end up being a lot more than just trade though.

I read an economist article yesterday on essentially the same topic. The EU are looking at ways of screening Chinese investment more rigorously in firms dealing with technology and infrastructure, as it could potentially compromise the security of our countries and allow China to catch up technologically in some areas.

FCC chief proposes steps to protect U.S. communications networks <---- actually China news as well.

Pai’s proposal follows the introduction of legislation by Republican Senators Tom Cotton and Marco Rubio in February that would block the U.S. government from buying or leasing telecoms equipment from Huawei, the world’s third largest smartphone maker, or Chinese telecommunications equipment maker ZTE Corp (000063.SZ), citing concerns the companies would use their access to spy on U.S. officials.

Earlier this month, U.S. President Donald Trump blocked a potential takeover of Qualcomm Inc by Broadcom Ltd, citing national security concerns.

I'm sure we won't be hearing from our local Libertarian on the subject. That would require making an actual criticism that's beyond an off hand remark.

China says North Korea's Kim pledged commitment to denuclearization

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-northkorea-missiles-china/china-says-north-koreas-kim-pledged-commitment-to-denuclearization-idUSKBN1H305W

This seems a bit too convenient, easy, suspicious... to me. I hope I'm wrong.
