Pragmatism is about planning your strategy carefully. Intelligence is about coming to the right conclusion.
Obama was very pragmatic on his foreign policy, yet routinely came to the completely wrong decision. Likewise, democrats as a whole can think they're planning long term, but be completely wrong when they misjudge where the country is headed.
What happens if 10 years from now, we're in the same state on gun control as we are today? That's the safe bet. Where would that put the democrats who came to the wrong conclusion?
