Can all you honorable leftist Americans give us a refresh on what the word "triggered" means, in your opinion? It seems to get thrown around a lot in various contexts.

I think of it as when someone lets their emotions override their debating skills.

When someone is mentally ill then a 'trigger' is an event or experience that elicits a stress response due to their illness. It's a very unpleasant experience. Then people who weren't mentally ill began claiming to be 'triggered' by talking about certain controversial subjects at universities in order to avoid uncomfortable discussions. Then the alt-right started mocking them by calling them 'triggered' when they got emotional about a subject and now it's just another way of saying 'umadbro?'.

It's a retarded troll basically.

The whole thing is a shame as it makes people who do genuinely suffer afraid to say so for fear of being mocked or not taken seriously.

The same reason for rape. If you have a bunch of idiot spoiled brat women filing fake rape charges, no one is going to care about rape anymore.

kinda. right winged people latch on to every article with a title like "82 Gender categories identified by the USC gender studies dept." and then make a "now liberals say there are 82 genders" memes. which is pretty hacky.

a better example is the term racism, which has almost no concrete meaning or connection to the social consequences of being labelled racist.
