Call to Digital Nomads

and those like me...who are interested.

# A Digital Nomad
* To me is someone who works remotely as a full time job or as side gig.
* Here is a wiki definition: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_nomad
* Here is a subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/digitalnomad/

# Why am I making this thread?
* To expose/reveal digital nomads within d2jsp and learn about the journey they've taken.
* To learn from their mistakes-- if any.
* Act as blog if i decide to transform into a digital nomad myself.
* I've personally benefited.... leaps and bounds from posting previous threads on this site, but mostly from these two threads: http://forums.d2jsp.org/topic.php?t=72111031&f=124, http://forums.d2jsp.org/topic.php?t=72992593&f=124
* Hope that others outside of myself may/can benefit from content discussed within it.

# What I want to do
### Salesforce Standalone Apps /Components
* Create standalone components / applications that admins, devs, and end users would like to expose in their salesforce environment without the cost of having it implemented custom.
* Allow what I build to move away from a traditional admin setup to allowing anyone with access to utilize both the setup and outputs of the apps/components I create.
### Salesforce Implementations/Consultant
* Setup or Implement new or existing salesforce orgs.
* Expand on Standalone Apps by offering custom configurations as required?
* Maybe support and existing and or help troubleshoot/fix.

# Where am I as of 11/17/2017?
* Graduated December 2015 from a technical school. Got my degree in Web Software Developer. Emphasized in Java/Android/Javascript
* Interned at a company that does Salesforce Implementations, becoming full time shortly after -- current elapsed time there ~1.5 years.
* Knowledge, especially as of late has been growing exponentially... I don't have a computer science degree, but as my understanding becomes more versed in things like... memory storage/allocation for example. Things are clicking/understanding is coming faster/more immediate/second nature.
* I am unsure on if want to transform soon and do as described above in 'what i want to do' or if this is something I turn over and continue to sit/think on as I continue in my career
^^^ This is huge.
* I've been spending 2-3 hours a day for a few days writing down and designing things that coincide with 'What I want to do.' Mostly designing potential standalone apps that I might want to make. No filter on if they already exist as I don't want to get saddened if what I want to make is already invented. Id rather brainstorm as it might lead me somewhere else and inspire other avenues.
* I've been spending time thinking/planning/researching/reaching out - in regards to opening/taking a business approach to this.
* I am confident in my abilities, or ability to learn, research, and seek those with knowledge and experience.

This is in markup so if I decide I want to move to git and expand/modify upon it without much rework. If there are threads on d2jsp archived/similar to the topic of digital nomads please link. Sorry if this thread is long / quite possibly a headache to read through.

To start maybe if there are any digital nomads amongst us who would like to share introduce away? Either way, if no digital nomads want to reveal themselves, I plan on using this thread like a blog. If you have questions for me feel free to also ask away.

Ooopss mistell! You guys now know my secrete. ;'(

02/17/2017-02/27/2017: Created a blog site -- ended up scratching it and instead took what I learned and started making a portfolio site.
02/20/2017: Got my Salesforce Platform Dev I certification out of the way, starting studying for II.
02/27/2017-03/04/2017: Most of the portfolio project is shelled out and I know what my next steps with it are.

The Portfolio Project

Here are three screenshots of the portfolio site showing what it looks like in large/medium/small screen sizes.
https://ibb.co/i1Sndv
https://ibb.co/bS9NBF
https://ibb.co/htmPQa

Next steps with the portfolio site:

0) Look at other blogs/portfolios and see if I want to include anything else
- Time frame always/continuous look for new things to add or change/include
- I got to this point after looking at sample blogs / sites and taking design aspects I liked from each

1) Replace [HOME] with a logo
- Time frame n/a
- depends on inspiration

2) Decide on Fonts. Not happy with the fonts at present and would like to modify
- Time frame, next working session finish

3) Finalize colors to use.
- Time frame n/a
- This might or might not change, undecided.

4) Wire up Contact Me by learning PHP.
- Timeframe currently end of year
- Taking both intro/adv classes in fall, but might self learn prior to accelerate this.

5) Remove LinkedIn icon on the preview articles and replace with a link icon
- The link icon will navigate to the live preview of it

6) Wire up the "Read Me" to navigate the preview articles to the full post.
- Continuous with each new thing added to the portfolio section.

7) Host this to be public
- Timeframe end of year
- Current plan was to use https://www.1and1.com/ to do purchase the domain and to host.
- Will research much more and ask additional opinions when I get to this spot.

QA
Q: Why did you stop using markup?
A: Well I intend now to just blog this progress down the road instead of using git now.

Q: Why not use Wordpress?
A: I've learned/have been learning so much as I work on this and want this to be / act as a learning experience. Also this feels like I can continue to personalize this as I go down the road.

Q: Some of the next steps for the Portfolio Project seem long term.... What ever will you work on if not this?
A: Yes. Agreed. I guess i'll have to start hosting/creating standalone content to be available here.

Current Questions
1) I started to look at how I might want to wire up the contact section -- I think php is the route I would like to take/learn. Any advisement against it or suggestions?
2) Is there anything that you guys see just from the portfolio pictures or my next steps that are like "Hey.... silly... why not xyz or ...." (any feedback)?

03/18/2017-04/01/2017: Currently a bit of my time during my working sessions are going towards studying for my next salesforce cert, but I have still made good progress on the portfolio project and have started / made good progress on the first item I would like to be included in it.

Location History Mapping Project

03/18/2017
Instead of working on the portfolio site I worked on one of my ideas to start filling the 'shells' of the portfolio and to be a potential "overlay" of the green header of the portfolio home page as I haven't been digging that portion.

04/01/2017
I worked again on this and I am liking the direction it is taking. I added file upload that can consume the json generated from google and then I push that data into markers (if it is <x distance) and kind of play through it. The data I'm using is for the year of 2017 and has ~123,000 "locations" which I am creating ~4000 markers from. I am then iterating through and placing a marker every 100 ms and removing it after 10,000 ms. Here is a .gif of the current state of this:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/mv4mh04utbbp7ed/location-history-map-gif-preview-2.gif?dl=0

Next time I work on this I think the first thing I'd like to look at options to replace creation/storing of google markers to storing an array of js object that I would kind of "draw" lines between the points so that I can create a cleaner illustration of travel or movement.

The Portfolio Project

Worked on creating how I would maybe display the project above in a portfolio:
https://ibb.co/kZVwTv
https://ibb.co/eGdTaa

I just created a shell, but this is kinda the direction I'm thinking of going with.

Current Questions

1) What is a good way to make "re-usable" html. What I mean by this is I want the "header" and "footer" on my home page to be applied on all my pages -- what would be a good way to do this?
2) Should I combine css/js now or wait until I get further and refactor in one sweep?
3) Any suggestions on google maps api to kinda "draw" lines? Have you done it in past type thing?

So I took some time today exploring the drawing of lines instead of map markers. My initial results are grim as it seems to be trying to bounce between two devices once in a while. (not always) I let the same data play through and noticed the same thing now when I'm using map markers. I think for now I will prepare to table this project by cleaning my code, commenting it out, and just in general documenting what I did/what I learned from it.

E* I will revisit this i think in the future and just whitelist like my home location lat/lng to not be added so that this bouncing doesn't happen, but i think i wanna move on to the next thing for a while and circle back.
