There are no statistics over rape with any credibility. A sizeable chunk of accusations are spurious and/or malicious. What % that is, no one can say. Its not insignificant. It may be a majority or a fraction

There are no reliable statistics on rape crimes because theres no uniform reporting methodology, vast underreporting and wildly inconsistent definitions of a crime that itself is defined by culture as opposed to crimes with objective damages like murder or theft and its hard to prove, which discourages victims from coming forward.

I honestly think it should be police investigations specifically because it is outside the realms of academia.

Most large colleges/universities at least in the United States have their own campus police department. A more interesting question would be should rape/sexual assault be investigated by outside departments such as state police/investigators.
