Everybody is a target in individualist society. Western freedom views other people as limitations on our own freedom instead of people working together as a path to freedom, but that is the subject of another thread entirely.
It's arrogance. Things would be 'this way' if only 'they' weren't [...]. People are so convinced of their own merit that they believe they are unique in their grace. We are so full of ourselves that there is no room for others.
Actually, I don't see this as a character flaw. I believe arrogance stems from negative psychic tension which has manifested itself within the body. Yoga is about releasing tension within the energetic body using the physical body.
In the West people are so locked up in their heads that they can't even remember the feeling of joy; they think it is childish. At best we usually go through the motions of happiness but without the ecstatic loss of control.
Unhappiness is a condition, not a trait.
