For reference he can read the book during recess , lunch and free time . The teacher decides course acceptable material . If the teacher decides that classroom time is not appropriate time to be doing your religious studies ... Then it's not an appropriate time for it .

for reference, it seems the confusion lies in the explanation of the "free reading" it seems to me that the teacher allowed the students their choice of book for the accelerated reading course, in that the students were allowed their choice the parents saw it as free reading, while the school sees it as a circilum.

neither of this matters as the student was given the right to choose their book, and the only reasoning given for the book not being acceptable is cuz religion.

the school and the teacher need to be sued so as to set an example of how discrimination based on gender, religion, race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation is accepted by our nation. its the American way.

from the teachers quote it is pretty cut and dry religious discrimination

"I noticed that he has a book — a religious book in the classroom. He’s not permitted to read those books in my classroom."

as far as A. it seems the accelerated reading program is just that, the students get to read a book of their choice.

But in a letter e-mailed to the school district on Tuesday, Liberty Institute director of litigation Hiram Sasser demanded assurances that Giovanni be allowed to read his Bible during “accelerated reading program” class periods as well.

“If we do not receive a satisfactory response, we will proceed with the appropriate legal steps up to and including litigation,” Sasser wrote.

They are only aloud to choose any book during "free reading" so the bible is not an option during "accelerated reading". Their lawyer wants that changed.

if a black person is refused service at a lunch counter, if they do not take action against the lunch counter what is to stop it from happeneing again?

You're not even raising close to an apples to apples comparison ....

If he was refused entry to school or refused to be taught by the teacher because he is Christian that would be an equal argument.

Basically , the teacher thinks religious materials are inappropriate for school time ... And while I agree with her there are boundaries that are guaranteed by your constitution. He can have the bible with him... He can read it during his non instructional free time ... And she crossed a grey area during this "free" time ... Stop trying to exaggerate it as anything beyond that .

The school board clarified the issue and I'm sure "free" reading time in her class will be removed and she will clarifiy with a list of specific books non of which include the bible.

clearly religious discrimination.

furthermore the direct quote from the teacher is religious discrimination, to say the bible is not allowed in her classroom is completely inappropriate and akin to kicking a black person out of a diner for being black.

Free reading during the accelerated learning will probably just be removed entirely and replaced by a selection of curriculum books.... All because reason is being lost by some religious people .

Pornography is inappropriate for children .... Graphic violent books would be inappropriate .... Letting a 12 year old read Stephen king in public school is a bad idea ... And having religious text read as part of a public non religious schools curriculum is a bad idea.

Because people can't follow simple sense and general modesty ... It looks like all kids will lose their free time to read ...

There are much milder books put on the banned books list.  Until we address that the bible is fair game under those same standards......

No book should be banned.

if the matter was that the teacher said you have to read sci fi then it wouldn't be religious decrimination

“I noticed that he has a book — a religious book — in the classroom. He’s not permitted to read those books in my classroom.”

but the teacher didn't say that.

So I'm going to demand my child can read hustler in free reading time and if you try to raise a stink that it violates your child's moral compass then too bad ... And if you try to infringe upon my rights I'll harass and sue you ...

Do you see how stupid you sound yet ? I tried to be nice about it but common sense isn't working .

Some things are inappropriate for class room learning ... Most of society would agree that the bible shouldn't be part of a public school class setting .
