semantics, how I see it is socialism = state run economy, no private property, business, etc. Communism is the stateless version of that. Some countries have more aspects of socialism than others where the government interferes more with private industry but they are capitalist if they allow private property, business, etc.

That's objectively wrong though, as workers owning the means of production can be achieved with or without a government.
When 95% of people refer to socialism it's in reference to a mixed economy that is largely capitalist in nature, but with bigger govt, higher tax rates and publicly owned services. Whether that is what the word socialism means to you, others on this forum, or Karl Marx is irrelevant when attacking ideas of modern day socialists. You should be focusing on what makes up socialist policy rather than creating a false link from the varying interpretations of the word and using it as a stick to beat proponents of a capitalist system but with more state intervention.
