i get the sense that those who still strongly support trump are dug in for the long haul, regardless of where that leads
so i don't really think support can go much lower
starting near rock bottom and staying there shouldn't be viewed positively as 'maintaining steady support'
a support of around 40% isnt great by any measure, but I also wouldnt call it "rock bottom". and no, I dont think his supporters will stick with him no matter what.
if he really messes up healthcare or if he starts a war and introduces a conscription, or if a really big scandal comes up, or if he breaks with his anti-immigration stance, his core supporters might leave him.
in the following article, bottom third, under the headline: "Immigration: Opening the door":
https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/three-things-trump-could-do-to-hurt-obamacare/if thats a one time thing, its no big deal. but if trump really changes his position on immigration, I think that is something that would really not go down well with his core supporters.
