Trout season just opened here too. We have a shitton of ferns here, Ive never bothered with them. Maybe I'll have to broaden my horizons. We have trout with dandelion salad with wild onions and mushrooms.

mmmmmm that sounds good, I've had dandelion wine (was interesting to say the least lol) but never had ate the greens.

our trout season opened april 1st. I;ve been doing well on the landlocked salmon, have caught 4 over 18" this year.

The spores are in the top so it should reproduce when the conditions are right again. They grow funny here, at night when its raining between like 55-65 degrees. Then it has to have a certain soil type. They seem to like acidic soil like that produced by dying trees. Apples and ash seem to be their favorites around here.

that makes sense

it grows at the base of a very large pear tree, so I guess it likes the rotting fruit and shade

Don't poop near camp. Make sure you dig a deep enough hole and burn the toilet paper.

why not? ive got a small ditch 40 yards away and burn everything every couple of days in the summer. the charcoal and ashes work sort of like a kitty litter.

you got nettle on your property sheriff?

i found out awhile ago those itchy fuckers are edible. they sprout in heavy abundance where im at (probably 250 miles south west of you)

wood nettle is the subspecie to stinging nettle ive been trying out.

might try a tea tomorrow; raw tastes like cucumbers but better.

supposed to have excellent nutrition. the german army made their uniforms out of their fibers i read back in the 1800s.

nettle pain usually goes away instantly if i put water on the contact area, but it can be pretty bad. If you lift your knees and stomp over nettle its nowhere near as bad as letting it brush into you and wrapping you up.
it has double the calories of spinach (double carbs) and a high calcium content so its good for eating if it doesn't end up killing you in the process.

figured it would be worth posting here since it grows over most of the united states and europe.

In bear country it is an attractant. Bears are thought to have the best sense of smell of any animal on earth. For example, the average dog’s sense of smell is 100 times better than a humans. A blood hound’s is 300 times better. A bear’s sense of smell is 7 times better than a blood hound’s or 2,100 times better than a human. So if a dog came into your house and took a shit you would smell it and so would a bear.

right on. i used to brush those scent stats off until i seen my neighbors dog follow my scent trail to my deer stands at sprinting speed.

ive tried tieing my shirt on the opposite trails crossed creeks tried different scent blockers, but that dog can follow my scent right up ladders its pretty insane. when he overshoots my trail he will instantly double back and regain scent. its like his nose is tied to me by a rope.

now if a bear is 7 times better than that i have to call bs, because my neighbors dog can smell me from a quarter mile away lol.
