Touhou probably wouldn't be as popular as it is now if it weren't for the cast being nearly entire females and the sheer amount of characters. *game-wise*

Otherwise, it's popularity mainly introduces itself from the music.

or maybe it would have more fans.. females attracted to the shotas, and more men (like me) who feel a large disconnect because they have to play as a female.

the Game is obviously popular largely because it is a great game coupled with AMAZING music, and it is blatantly obvious that the character design is the weakest aspect of Touhou.

If the balance was something like 80% female 20% male or even 90% to 10% it would be much better IMO and would not affect the already established community, in fact I think it would enhance it.

It would also make Touhou cosplay a much more appealing Idea.

it is also pretty obvious I am not the only one who wants males in Touhou, since just about every time there is a Q&A with ZUN somebody brings it up.

Fujoshits doesn't make a high amount of fans in any fanbase, so why try catering to them into Touhou?

It's like any other harem manga/anime. When there is competition the MC has to deal with, the viewers tend to get upset but they're aware that most likely he'll be cut off anyways.

You try adding male characters into the equation for Touhou and then the yuri sh*tstorm will be disturbed with normal or yaoi crap which will bother other fans.

Sure the following is huge for music/manga/games, but the sheer amount of H material with it is simply phenomenal.

tl:dr - Touhou needs only one token male character, Rinnosuke. ZUN is on the right track.
