Pretend this is in the main guideOpen WoundsOpen wounds [OW from now on] is something every melee PvP char should consider. It's basically an unresistable form of Poison damage, i.e. constant damage over a set course of time. It's extremely useful, but for some reason overlooked [possibly because people simply look at their char screen in order to figure out what's the most damaging setup].
How does OW work? Several items have a % chance to trigger OW. Dracs, for example, impart a 25% OW bonus. Gore Riders give 10%. How does it work in terms of you WWing something? In a nutshell, you basically add up your sources of OW and that basically gives you your % to trigger it. So if you have Gores and Dracs, you have a total of 35% OW. You can actually readh 100%, with anything past 100% being useless.
The equation for how much
damage OW will cause [Taken from the Arreat Summit, a site you guys should visit whenever you have questions]:
Clvl=1-15: 25*(9*Clvl+31)/256
Clvl=16-30: 25*(18*Clvl-104)/256
Clvl=31-45: 25*(27*Clvl-374)/256
Clvl=46-60: 25*(36*Clvl-779)/256
Clvl=61-99: 25*(45*Clvl-1319)/256
Clvl = Character level
Let's take my barbs level [93]. The equation would look like [this is damage
per second]:
25 * (45 * 93 - 1319) / 256
25 * (4185 - 1319) / 256
25 * 2866 / 256
71,650 / 256
= 279.9~ damage.
Since that damage happens for period of 8 seconds: 279.9 * 8 = 2,239 ~ damage.
However, since it's PvP, the damage is reduced by 1/4th, so 2,239 / 4 = 559.7 or 560 total PvP damage done. 560~ practically free damage. The only way to negate OW is to have some insane life regen [to the point where your build is designed around it, almost] or to use health pots. This is a lot of damage. OW cuts straight through things like Bone Armor and Energy Shield, meaning you can win duels by doing hit and runs and bleeding your opponent to the point where the next WW pass will kill them. In many matchups OW is absolutely critcal. This is also one of the many reasons Dracs >>> Steelrends. While rends give some ED, that bonus can't compare to the possible huge damage output Dracs provide. Utilizing OW allows you to constantly deal damage without putting yourself in immediate danger.
Note: These calculations are not for ranged attacks. Ranged OW is similiar, using the same exact equation, but instead of dividing by 4 [the PvP penalty], you divide by 8. So 2,239 / 8 = 279~ OW damage from a ranged source [in a BvCs case, the Widowmaker]. Remember this is just the OW damage; the damage you deal with the weapon itself is NOT factored in, which should be obvious.
Also note: Since you're dual-wielding, you must be aware that any OW% on a weapon [in the vast majority of cases, Beast] only affects
that weapon. The OW% will not magically transfer onto your Grief [if it did, dual-wielding would be even more insane]. Off weapon sources such as Dracs/Gores/OW Belts, however, will apply to
both weapons.
I hate math.
