The Earth revolves around the Sun because the laws of gravity compel it to.
Your left foot is bigger than your right because of your genetics that you inherited from your parents.
You are here because your parents decided to conceive you and see it through your birth.
You lost a race because others finished before you.

God created the universe, and thus gravity, the DNA system, reproduction, etc.

If you ultimately trace time far back enough, the answers will all eventually lead to God, but to answer every question "Because of God" is just stupid.

You could have just said "Why are you retarded? God!" and burned him, but you countered with a well thought out articulate post and I approve of that.

@The bold. This is exactly what my concern is. Are you suggesting there aren't people who use god to answer most, if not all questions they have about the world? Did you think your Impressive display of common sense would distract from your total misunderstanding of an analogy?

Basically, in response to your OP- the fundamental distinction is 'relative to what?'.

Relative to reality, 1+5 =/=7.
Relative to a story, 1+5 = God.

If you want to be accurate relative to reality, you don't bring god into things. However if you want to be accurate relative to a story, by all means, bring god, gondorf, pixies, unicorns, and fred- my pink elephant.
