I'm against having to work, personally.  I don't think it's remotely necessary.  But we don't have a model for not working, so here we are.

We have a model for doing work that isn't as hard, stressful, or soul-sucking as the norm, but not many people seem to follow it.

The "Why do we work?" question is actually really deep, but the vast majority of people are happy to answer it with some sort of "because we're supposed to" type answer instead of actually trying to think about it.

I am entirely too lazy these days to delve deeply into any topic, as evidenced by my being properly thrashed in the voter suppression thread. I've taken to just dabbling in jsp in my spare time while focusing more on real life, like getting a good guy elected to the US Senate. I wouldn't mind digging a little deeper for an answer for you, but my gut reaction lately is to slough it off.

Why do we work most likely varies widely depending on the person. I know I work because I like having both material posessions but I also want to have access to education. I want my things for reasons I do not care to delve into, and I want my education because I'm easily bored and more entertained reading my calculus book than a novel.

"Why do we work" explained, with some extras. This does not mean working in general is bad, because I do enjoy the things I buy as well, just the way the system is setup mainly.

aka, because we're supposed to. thanks tho. you could have your material possessions and access to education while doing work that you enjoy much more than you do today.

as an aside, when i was in highschool and taking the AP english tests, I didn't remember exactly how to spell possess, so I spelled it four different ways during one of the essays: poses, posses, posess, and possess. It was more or less because I thought english was dumb and I ended up with either a 3 or a 4 on that test.

I don't really have access to better work at the moment. It's either the work I'm in or some fast food chain, believe me I've been looking for more enjoyable work and it simply isn't available to me where I am (as far as I have been able to find). But I'm always open to suggestions on where to look :)
