I started drinking a while ago and I think I'm going to continue drinking throughout the night. At some point, I'm going to want to start attention whoring on jsp, so I thought I might as well start a containment thread so I don't screw up any serious discussions. In the mean time, does anyone have any questions? Or more importantly, can anyone provide a logical, thought-out answer to the question, "Why do we work?"

Ok, so maybe you need some facts about me to ask questions about. I have two college degrees. One is in Chemical Engineering from a school that has been ranked in the USNEWS top 15 (for chemical engineering) since I started there. I spent three years there and never took any notes. The second is an MBA from an off-shoot of a major school (aka, the main UF is Gainsville, but there are a bunch of different UF's.).

So your first degree is reasonably useful and your second is not? OK.

The "Why do we work?" question is actually really deep, but the vast majority of people are happy to answer it with some sort of "because we're supposed to" type answer instead of actually trying to think about it.

that's definitely one way to look at it. the second degree was more of a "lolz, sure ill do that" than a "this will definitely help my career" type decision.

I'm against having to work, personally. I don't think it's remotely necessary. But we don't have a model for not working, so here we are.
