I've got a 95 dodge Dakota ext cab 318 46re. Started slipping a week ago, went to put it in drive and it started to move and then just completely slipped out. I've wanted to tear into one of these for awhile, so I'm gonna pull a junkyard trans as a temp while I rebuild my current. My question is if there is a year compatibility concern with the 46re? I had a friend say he through it had to be a year matching trans but that sounded odd to me.

Dosent have to be year:year

There will be a range where everything is the same or only minor things changed, should be fairly easy to find that information and then look for those vehicles in the specific ranges

Yeah that was my belief. Thanks for the clarification.

When it comes to needing a midsize truck there isn't really a better option. I mean you got the Colorado , but everyone knows the reputation they have.
I'll own whatever if it serves my purpose. My eco friendly is a Toyota Celica, mid truck dakota, work truck f150, fun car pontiac gto. You aren't gonna sell me on "this brand is better than that brand".

Make sure you do indeed have a 46RE first. The 46RE was offered on 5.9L trucks and the 46Rh was offered on 5.2L and v6 trucks in 95.

The difference is in the tail housing, The 46RE is a computer controlled / shifted transmission with the speed sensor on the output shaft while the 46RH used a mechanical governor on the output shaft and was a longer case than the 46re. These are not compatible with each other.

Either way, the 46RE was offered from 95 to early 03 in dakota / durango / half ton trucks
The 46Rh was offered from 90-98 in the same vehicles.
