im just so intrigued at how newer bjj gyms are do different than the traiditional one I started at

When I started my entire first week was breakfalling, pretty much all we did was breakfall and strength train

I saw some day 1 guys in my gym the other day and coach had them practicing RNC defense and i was dumbfounded lol

Not knocking on you so please don't take it that way... What kind of jiu jitsu gym has their students do strength training for class?! I get doing breakfalls to start, but not sure about strength training...

Doing RNC defense very early on is good imo. Defense lays down the foundation. I would definitely say day 1 should be movement drills though.

oh im sure I just cant imagine people not breaking wrists because they dont know how to breakfall

Yeah, we go over movement drills during warmups before every class.

Defensive stance, break falls, shrimping, rolling, yada yada.

sorry maybe strength training is the wrong way to describe it even though it's the focus.

so like, pushups, situps, any sort of aerobic and anaerobic exercises, matt work, etc

and it was 15+ years ago

today its straight technique stuff day one, im not knocking it but its just so different than when I started

That makes more sense. Apologies on not understanding. Yeah, some places definitely still do the exercising as warm ups. The place I train does it too for about 10 minutes. Personally, I'm not a fan of sprints/pushups/situps/etc. if I'm there to learn jiu-jitsu. I get it for people new to the hobby and needing to build some stamina and/or get some nerves out before learning. However, at some point those people will acclimate and their time would be better spent with just learning jiu jitsu.

Agreed on both lol. Don't get me wrong, I'll still do the warmups; but bitch on a forum like here. Won't catch me bowing to a picture of some dead cult leader (Helio *cough*) though lol
