Purple belt in Bjj, usually go inside or outside trips the most for takedowns but will take whatever is available

Very nice! How long have you trained?

Getting in a good amount of mat time then. I applaud those that get 4+/week in. I generally get 3, sometimes 4 in per week. As I get older (easily over 30 :D ) though, I need more recovery time from comp class and wrestling class. Try to get 2 days/week of lifting in too.

I’m 35, so I feel like I’m running out of physical prime soon. Trying to stuff all in now while I can. I stretch 2x a day to help me avoid injury and just go a bit lighter if I need the rest. Reps/rolling > sitting out because you’re at least practicing techniques

Yes, thank god the TRT is right around the corner for us. I'll definitely be saucing it up to keep going. I'm a smaller guy (145lbs) with old man strength already from continuous lifting so I'm ready to reach Super Saiyan form.

Agreed on the stretching too and should never sit out when at class (exception being injury). You prefer stretching prior or post or both? I've been reading up on the benefits of post stretching only, and warming up/getting lose from drilling passes and light takedowns. Due to a few injuries, I find that my muscles fatigue a little quicker if I stretch prior to training.

Stretch when I wake up and before bed. We do drill 1st so that’s my warmup and rolling after. I’m 135-140 lbs. On a given day with foods/fluids so I know what it’s like being physically smaller/weaker than most (why I always train if possible for technical advantages)

...I mean, Professor Helio was still actively teaching and rolling at 95. Just sayin'.

At 50, I just set new PRs for flat bench and squat, which isn't exactly the same as athletic ability on the mat, but is (hopefully) inspirational. A little luck willing, you'll still be able to keep doin' what you love for some years to come. :)

Also: sup ozzy, sup Tear. *waves* Just popping in randomly. :)

im just so intrigued at how newer bjj gyms are do different than the traiditional one I started at

When I started my entire first week was breakfalling, pretty much all we did was breakfall and strength train

I saw some day 1 guys in my gym the other day and coach had them practicing RNC defense and i was dumbfounded lol

It’s mostly tradition from what I’ve noticed. I trained at a GB gym in SF and they’re extremely intertwined with tradition “ose, bow, acknowledge partners and coaches in order, etc”. The gym I train at now isn’t a traditional gym, but there are a few guys that are trained by tradition and they keep them going.

There may be more, but this is what I’ve noticed.
