This is true for most things, not just phones.
Just because it also includes surveillance and "control" (not sure what you're referencing there), doesn't mean the benefits aren't worth it.
For me, I've saved many hours thanks to GPS, using the internet to lock my door, using a card instead of carrying wads of cash around and going to check cashing places instead of using direct deposit.
The more convenient something is, the less secure and the more surveillance there is.
That's just the way life is.
P.S. I don't see how you can hate phones but use another device to access the internet. It's only *slightly* better than a phone.
