If they play really well they could get top 3-4, but no more than that I think. There's too much space between them and City & Liverpool.
3-5 is for Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham.
Realistically they would be 5-6th.

Lisandro Martinez is a 5"9 CB coming to the prem and Utd are paying £55m for him. It's a risky one. Utd always sign players that the manager is after, never ones identified by their scouting department anymore, which is why the squad had to get changed like 3 times in 10 years

United’s scouting department hasnt existed since like 2008 it seems. Between summer 2005-2006 the club managed to sign Van der Sar, Evra, Vidic, Carrick, and Park for a combined ~£40M (Evra, Vidic, Park being 24 and Carrick 25 at the time of their signings). No way the current crop could bring in even half that impact at even triple the cost!

The last true impact signings were a no-brainer van Persie (short term fix) and De Gea the year prior
