2022 - Need to drop 10k on a game just to be an average player.
Yeah no kidding.
Reminds me playing a game called Risk Your Life way back in the day. There were boss raids and the PvM gear was pretty cool, although when you upgraded your gear it glowed and that's what really made you stand out. In any event, we'd have player shops in the main town, so when you're walking around, the atmosphere was like "wow, look at this guy". Not once did the thought of "oh wow, that's a whale right here" ever come up. It was more of wow, that player loves this game and has put in a lot of dedication. And also "oh jeez, if I had to duel him, I'd probably get rekt". There was a thrill involved (positive and negative) against players, and comradery and respect. That kind of gaming atmosphere is incredible to experience.
Outside of classic wow and some other classic games, the newer gen of gamers simply won't get to experience that. Which is honestly pretty sad and IMO a downward turn in the gaming industry as a whole. Because it should never be about $
