If the housing market crashes, the broader market is going with it, so you might as well consider shorting the broader market.

So would you short the broader market? REITS performed the same as the market as a whole in the last housing crash.

Well the broader market has already “crashed” although it could definitely go further down, and most likely will.

I would hardly call this a crash at all. The S&P has still done over 12% per year for the last 5 years. Things have to average back, you can't just repeateadly do 25% per year.

Okay so again if you're not comfortable shorting the market as a whole you shouldn't be shorting REITS.

If you are, go for it. If you aren't is the Investment and Finance forum that's frequented by 4 users on a gaming website going to be what sways your opinion. If it is, again, you probably shouldn't be shorting anything.

Chill dude. It’s just a poll to spark conversation around the topic.

Most of the solid REITs are doing well. Also most REITs are commercial. So not really a great idea.

This is a good point. I made a bunch of money off of SPG during the Covid era, but now I’m thinking shorts.
My main concern, however, is not shorting commercial real estate, but residential real estate as a whole. Not just on the NYSE. I have not put my money where my mouth is though because I am actively buying single-family homes as rental properties. I don’t plan on stopping even through the interest rate hikes and possible market crash.
