In a year or maybe even half, you could probably get a dev position making half of that. But if you're going for something to match your current salary, it's not gonna happen anytime soon. Although, that doesn't necessarily mean you can't do it, but it'll be a few years out, at least.

He said he wants to switch to being a programmer, i.e be employed as one. This won't happen unless he knows what gets you hired. My advice comes from someone who has transitioned in a few months from a science field to being a programmer from barely coding, so I'm confident this information will help direct a newbie into the right path.

Unless he wants to take a massive pay cut on his salary he definitely shouldn't be switching anytime soon.

My advice to him is from someone who doesn't want him to shoot himself in the foot.

Thank you everyone for your honest feedback.

I know many JR SE that are being recruited into startups are making 70+

I’m sure it won’t be too bad. I also know SE’s similar to my base or more but given stock options or RSU pushing their tc 150k+

Not looking that far ahead, I’m gonna start slow and really grasp the idea of coding.

Ps I’m in the Bayarea and I’m paycheck to paycheck (somewhat) lmao

FAANG engineer here, I know a few friends personally who went the bootcamp route -> FAANG / unicorn startup, making roughly 150-160k TC in Seattle area right after the bootcamp.

Bootcamp route definitely pretty tough, friend of mine is pulling 50-60 hours some weeks on the material. Going to definitely be a tougher job market right now with the quantitative tightening going on and likely stagflation of the economy.

I would say try building some projects and see if it's something you'd want to get into before jumping into a bootcamp.

Thank you for the feedback sir! Definitely, I will be learning something part-time. I'm currently doing about 3-5 hours a day on self-learning and im pretty excited to start my own random projects.
