Prefer how it is now, so that "xx has sent you xx Forum Gold" messages disappear when I go to my inbox without reading them

You can disable the FG messages by going to your settings here https://forums.d2jsp.org/settings.php and checking the "Disable PMs for gold received".

Also this has no bearing on FG PMs because you would not mark them as unread. This only applies to messages that you manually apply the option for here
