Likely what joe said, in a party and someone put text chat in the party.

Nah homie it came up on the bottom left same font as people joining and dieing...... not in the middle where you can't even read it all from "party text"....

It was to long ago for me to remember if I was in a party, but this is most likely what happened.

Hold both joy sticks down and press A + down on the D pad which will bring up the function.
