I'm pretty fluent in Japanese and I do not recognize this character at all.

It may be an older Chinese character that isn't used so much or it could even be a logo or Family name.


I will ask my fiance this evening and see if she recognizes it, she is a Japanese national.

I even tried to do a lookup and couldn't find anything close.

This is not a recognizable kanji by Japanese speakers so I doubt you’ll get much information. If it is indeed a proper kanji character, my first hunch was that it might be the somewhat common Hizen mark, which is marked by 肥. It could be either heavily stylized or partially scratched out, or even a misprint. The lines mostly match up to it but not completely so I have doubts about it.

You check out some markings here: https://gotheborg.com/marks/20thcenturyjapan.shtml. A Hizen example is here. If you suspect Hizen may be a hit, Hizen simply represents the type of pottery from the Hizen region. The 肥 represents Hi, 前 (zen) is excluded. No real special meaning beyond that.
