Is bogus...and MLB fucked up with this one.

Corbin pitched only 167 innings this season. He won only 11 games, and had ZERO complete games.

Zach Wheeler pitched 213 innings, he was an absolute work horse who would regularly go 7+ innings, and had 3 complete games and 2 complete game shutouts. He lost the Cy Young because he pitched more innings than Corbin who was protected in a 6-man rotation and rarely faced hitters a 3rd time through the lineup. What a joke?

Wheeler had a 7.7 bWAR in his 213.1 innings this year. Burnes’ bWAR was a full two wins lower than Wheeler’s.

Quote
Zack Wheeler threw 27% more innings with an ERA only 12% worse than Corbin Burnes.

Wheeler: 2.73 ERA 213.1 IP
Burnes: 2.43 ERA 167 IP

I’m glad Wins don’t matter anymore for the Cy Young award, but I feel we’ve gone too far.

IP & ERA >>> Under-The-Hood stats for the CY IMO

We get it, Corbin was dominant in the fewer innings he pitched, which most guys would be when you have more rest between starts and fewer innings to pitch per start....

Reliably giving 7 innings in today's game is awesome, sucks Wheeler lost it :/.

It's the cy young award, not the most innings pitched award. If you cant even get 400 innings pitched, do you really deserve it?

I don't think Zach gets enough credit for throwing 213 innings when so few pitchers hit 200 anymore. It feels like that got largely disregarded in the voting... his workload should be extra impressive given how cautious most team's were with their starters.

Also, Wheeler's ERA prior to the 7th inning (when guys like Corbin Burnes were getting pulled) was like 2.00 or thereabouts. It's almost like he got penalized for being one of the few true horse aces in baseball this year...

I agree, if you dont get called a workhorse, you shouldn't even be eligible for the award. 167 innings is a travesty, it should be mandatory that you are top 10 in innings pitched to win the award
