they are both horrible games atm
the difference is that D3 is a fully polished turd and D2R is still a turd in the rough with potential to shine!
blizzard cant see that pvp = endgame and endgame = incentive to play

blizzard will never see this, because the founding fathers of Diablo have a very different perspective / philopshy around D2. For example, max shaefer @ exilecon mentioned in an aRPG when he sees another player, he wants to know who will win a fight.

Now the devs are listening to feedback and probably on the side of a "handshake pvp" feature. It's all downhill from here, there is a huge disconnect. It's really sad

The problem with d3 is its simplicity, it is all about maxing the damage / toughness, the challenge is merely on how to use the least time to do the most upgrade. The analogy is like when one is so simple as to get much money as possible, then you have nothing except money.

The beauty with RPG is about role playing, where is the role play if everyone just grind and everything is pre-made, and your decision does not matter, because everything is restricted. There is hardly any genuine trust if you don't have the ability to harm others.

This was done on purpose, everything simplified for families on couches playing D3 in their living rooms

I’ve recently picked it up again, played from launch til mp10 and a few hundred paragon, and like, it’s fun but it’s boring. I’m shocked all sources of damage end up generic. Just hit lvl 69 and apparently I have like 200k life, starting to hit for millions? All skill damage completely comes from items still apparently then spam plvls for crit I imagine. What kind of wizard am I you ask? Flaming blizzard I guess cuz it chains kills easier? I wanted to be a meteor shower wiz it’s so weird. Skills don’t feel like skills. I dunno trying to like it.

One person has joined a game in the time it took for those levels. He was p750 and I got some quick exp then he left. Suuuuper empty feeling. Just me?

You are looking at the symptom and not the underlying reason. Blizzard killed diablo 3, not d2r. The game is still... ok, but it's not revolutionary the same way d1 d2 starcraft or warcraft 3 were when they came out. And d2r isn't either.

All you can hope for is diablo 4 but... eh. Who knows. I have fun with diablo 3.

D3 was fine if you are just looking for mindless mobs kill and especially better on drugs with all the flashy shit.
