So I wanted to try 3D concept art for a bit, as I am applying for university next year, so before buying a Z-brush license I wanted to try and see if I had any sense at all for this type of work. I downloaded Nomad which was like 18$ on App Store and got started.

Here is my first ever sculpt made! (Never done any 3D or even clay sculptures in my life)

Using Nomad on iPad Pro 11” with Apple Pencil

Time estimated 3,5h

I would continue but the software crashes by changes at this point because the project has reached the max mb limit.

Might send this to Blender and keep working on it there as it lets me make larger projects, perhaps even take a good screen and set it into a scene and edit it in 2D! What do you think? Should I continue?

Appreciate all comments! :-)

Hey !

Oh such a bummer that you can't continue this one. I would've recommended to continue it to the point you can have a final image that you're happy with. For example the whole body or just the upper body. The fact that there is one arm missing make the thing unfinished and I would highly recommend finishing it to put it in your portfolio. This is a promising piece. If you got a graphic tablet for PC yeah sure try it in blender. Eventhough I think it's not the best soft to polish a model. There might be 30 days trial versions for Zbrush. Take a look at it. And you'll find anything you need here to get started https://www.artstation.com/learning/zbrush
It is also a good Idea to render the final image and paint over it a little bit in 2D to add detail/atmosphere/background.
3.5h for this is really great ! I feel that you already have a good Art/drawing knowledge background. And that's great to start sculpting. Actually it's the most important.

Now comes the tough part
-Don't do dragons, it's so boring to see students doing dragons. I mean for fun and to try things out, sure. To sell some artworks also, sure. But for future pieces to put in your portfolio try to be more original. For example a Hedgehog but the spikes are tentacles. You get the idea.
-Some spikes lack of resolution
-it seems you've put space for the nostrils but you didn't put them
-teeth are a bit weird, they aren't sharp enough
-I don't see the hand !? Show the world if you know how to sculpt hands. Just kidding

Nice work, can't wait to see more !

Edit : If you have any question about what I said, just don't hesitate to ask

3.5 hours and you''ve never touched any sculpting programs/mediums? i find it incredibly hard to believe

not familiar with the program but seems like a good start, are you basing it off a concept art?

Thanks, I will sincerely take that as a compliment!!! I was chatting with friends while doing the sculpt and They all told me ”perhaps you should start with an Apple lol” but I had already thrown myself into this dragon as I love dragons and trust me, you’re not the only one surprise with the result!

This was not based of anything, I started a sphere and started draging/pulling out horns, then I just made a single one and copy paste it 300 times as my friend called my stupidity out for not doing copy pastes lol.

As for the scales in the face, since I am new to this, I realised too late that I couldn’t properly put new clay on the face since I had stretched the initial sphere too far so I had to add these small scales by literally just making a new surface plain on top of it’s face 😑

Struggling here..

Wanted to work on a human face since I shouldnt be making dragons. Next up I’ll try something more original like a concept creature.
