Coming into the season, Buffalo likely knew that they weren't going to compete at a high level, so they add a big name FA and give him a one year contract for big $.
Spend big $ on a guy that they can trade for future assets in the future before the deadline, since it's a one year contract.
+ if Buffalo shined, having Hall for one year works out for them as well.
They clearly got fleeced in the trade, but they end this season with an extra 2nd round pick + a player, just because they gave him a one year contract. Secretly genius?
Obviously not all big name FA's will sign a 1 year contract or even a 2 year
So should bottom level teams offer big one year contracts on FA's, to likely trade before deadlines? It's basically trading $ for their future
A big name free agent will rarely sign with a team that is not of at least playoff caliber.
Usually they want to go to a contender.
A guy like Taylor Hall just took the money. Normally you are not going to be able to lure big names if you are an average/bottom half team.
I agree with your take about them getting something for nothing though. Even though they got fleeced they still won because they got assets out of thin air.
