He'd get 30m/yr on the open market very easy. I don't think they really overpaid that much for him and maybe they didn't really overpay. But the richest owner in sports didn't just trade for him to let him get to FA after 1 season. They traded for him to sign him to a long term contract.

What type of deal did you expect? I think it's in a very reasonable range when compared to other contracts.

Baseball contracts are always absurdly long and end up fucking the teams in the final half of it but they kinda backed themselves into this mess by starting the trend.

I agree. At year 5-6 typically players figure out if they want to stay with an organization depending on how that oirganization is doing (winning/losing).
