My gf almost started crying when I bought a bag of grain free dog food for our dog. It is mostly chicken and sweet potatoes.

She says she took 2 animal nutriton classes and NOT having grain in a dog's diet is very unhealthy for them. When I initially told her to explain it to me she said they need grain for energy. Obviously that is ridiculous.

Does a dog NEED grain ? I read something about a heart condition some breeds of dog get and they found even breeds who didnt typically present with that condition were getting it after going grain free. Too many variables/ too new of an issue and the research is too lacking to say grain free diets give dogs this issue.

Just my knowledge of human nutrition screams at me that it's absolutely ridiculous to think a dog needs grain. Humans don't even need grain, and dogs evolved eating exactly as we ate.

I'd think the more appropriate question would be are grains ok for dogs to eat, not is it ok for dogs to forego grains.

Anyone know any good research on this
