anything will max that game
most likely
a 1060 should have no issue
max your cpu can handle would be
a 3070 at best

There isn't much option with that cpu. An 5600xt or maybe even 5700xt would fit nicely, good enough for 1080p and good value for the money. if you can get one, of course... Anything from "new era" so 30xx nvidia or 6xxx from amd would be overkill for 1080p 60hz.

I'm in the exact same spot 6700k and 1060 6gb zotac AMP - I've been struggling to find a proper upgrade, somehow this graphics card is worth more now than it was 5 years ago?

I didn't say its not great, i said that any midtier and up gpu would be bottlenecked by it

Of course, but the question is how much. 20series maybe a few percent. 30series maybe where the bottleneck could start to be an issue. If he gets a 1080ti or even a 2080 he’s not gonna be bottlenecked enough to make the upgrade not worth it.

But he should be overclocking that thing

I always think that people looking for upgrades by NEW items. Now, that means 30xx from invida and 6xxx from AMD (eventho nothing in stock) are the new lineup, and almost none of them would be happy with a 6700k. Thats why i mentioned 5600xt, 5700xt or yes, 1070 or 1080ti from nvidia the max i would go. But they are all secondhand now.
