Try nicehash for begineers easiest way to start into the cryptomining world ---> Lets you understand a bit how cryptomining works.

After that, read about rigs, check videos, find what and what not to do.

My only issue when I started rigs is getting some wrong parts.

You need : Rig frame, GPU's, Motherboard (6+GPU slot), Processor+fan (Check correct socket for your motherboard), 8gb+ Ram (Check correct DDR# for your motherboard), GPU Risers, (I suggest the 6pins to Sata(Male) or Molex to Sata(Male) ), Ethernet cable, Power supply ( Very important to make sure you have enough power+wires ), SSD for windows (120GB) or 32gb usbkey HiveOS etc (Read on that)
Optionnal : If you use 2 Power Supplies, you will need a Dual PSU Wire, or card, so they start at the same time. You may need a PWR Switch but you can jumpstart with a screwdriver ( Videos on how to do that ), You may need 120MM fans to blow air away if cards heat too much.

May forget some stuff, but definitely go see Nicehash before you go on making a rig.

Nice info man. I'm just using kawpowminer mining some raven on my gaming rig for shits and giggles atm.

I ordered 2 1050tis but my old motherboard wouldn't recognize the second gpu so I returned em and ima look into something else

I found some old 1060 and 1080 6 gpu rigs for sale online(complete sets)
Would these be worth buying? Or would you not invest in a used rig

And Is it even worth starting up this late into the game?

People are overpricing full mining rigs nowadays, not worth buying.... And it's always worth starting. I told myself for 5 years that I should start mining and just started.... If i did start 5 years ago id already be rich lol

Read a lot about it on various sites, you have whattomine tells you which algo to mine based on which cards you have.
Read about DAG and DAG Limits for ethereum mining, very important, know that you can still mine different coins with lower RAM cards... and have in mind the length of your Return of Investment, can't be longer than 9Months to 1 year to be (worth) it.
Read about bios modding for multi gpu settings, for example, my motherboard only detected 4 cards stock, but I modded the bios so it sees more - I used this setting-up-motherboards-for-mining on GetPimp(website)

The most important part I think is to buy cards at a good price.

If mining was only produce with nuclear electricity I wouldn't mind but atm it's just a bunch of carbon pollution
