After doing nothing but stabilizing for 3 (timed) minutes, I failed the mute. This is very different from my experience at rank 27 muting my max (mystical lvl 25)

Simply speaking, as your rank increases your Stabilize/Transmute speed increases ever so slightly. Early on, (less than rank 10), item tier's and rarities outpace your rank. Once you catch up to that threshold by gaining some ranks - any maximum you see on the chart you'll be able to do, it may take a long time and be inefficient - but it's possible.
My experience is the same, My max is ATM Mythical lvl 25 and i can those with ease just takes a bit longer.
Might not be fastest way of gaining xp but i still do them cause i cant be picky when im always out of items to mute.
