Really Dumb question here.... I downloaded Firefox the other day. But when I download anything it blocks it saying, "File Not Downloaded. Potential Security Risk". So I want to download it, BUT Theo only 2 options it gives are "Open and Remove File (which I don't know why Remove File is there because it didn't even download). So obviously the only option if I want to download it is "Open". But that literally downloads the file AND THEN OPENS IT!? lol. Like I just want to download the file, then determine for myself if the file is malicious without it being automatically opened,

I can't find anywhere in Firefox for it to let me download without opening. and Yes I see Preferences -> General -> Applications gives the fake appearance to be able to change this, but I can't manually add file types there and it hasn't asked me how to handle any new file types that aren't on the list already. This is a clean install of Firefox.

Am I missing something or does Firefox want to be less secure in which case I'll definitely stop using it.

im not familiar with firefox anymore

however your downloads go into a file typically a "downloaded" folder, which you could search your computer for?

Indeed it goes to the download folder, but my issue is it automatically opens whatever is downloaded. I don't want it to automatically open. I'd typically like to test it first for malware/virus before opening it.

Copy paste from Google:

Click the menu button Fx57Menu and select Options.
In the General panel, go to the Applications section.
Select the entry for the file type you want to change.
Multiple entries for the same file format or extension? Some file types can include more than one Internet Media type.
The Action column will give you a drop-down menu, with options on action to take, whenever you click that type of file.
Fx78Applications-PDF-Win

Always ask: This will prompt you to select what action you want Firefox to take when you click on that type of file. This can be useful if Firefox is automatically saving a file type or is always opening it with a certain program and you want to be asked what to do.

've read those same exact instructions at least 9 previous times.. However it doesn't let me manually add a filetype and it's not automatically adding filetypes that I've downloaded to this list so I'm stuck.

Could you make your downloads go into a folder or USB instead of opening

Yes, I can change the folder to a different folder or a USB, but it still opens automatically once it finishes downloading. Meh. I'm just going to uninstall Firefox and give Chrome a go. This is absurd.

Open and remove just means "I don't need the installer after it's done so get rid of it"

Choose that, install firefox, then you don't have to worry about the installer sitting in your download folder taking up space for 10 years.

I'm talking about downloading .xlsx, .docx, .rar files. it's auto-opening them. -- a completely separate issue.

BUT as a side note: Firefox updated last night and now appears to ONLY download files. It no longer auto-opens files.

Firefox Nightly 86.0a1 (2020-12-24) (64-bit)

Fix? Update to the Latest Version.
