Chess is an insanely complicated game when you're trying to play it and understand how to think 5-10+ moves ahead at all times. Understanding it from a spectator's perspective is exponentially easier. They break it down enough for a casual observer to enjoy and understand it, but they have enough depth, that even fans of the game will enjoy it.

I mean do you at least know how to play chess ? Yeah the show is centered around chess, and there’s a lot of chess being played, but this is a much deeper show than that. Minimal actual chess knowledge is required to enjoy the story

Most of the top chess players in the world stream on Twitch, a lot of them posted their thoughts on the show if you care about the accuracy of the depiction. You can search for people like Hikaru and the Botez sisters on Youtube to see what they thought about the actual chess and tournaments.

You really don't need to know chess to follow the story though.
