Reboot your machine, then relaunch D2. You CANNOT close down game.exe properly yourself without rebooting the machine, and as long as that process is in memory, you won't be able to login.

Never heard of Task Manager? You can definitely close it down. might not be "properly" the only reason key in use is because Bnet hasn't disconnected it. They send data packets periodically. I would say it has already disconnected

this isn't true, you can close game.exe or reboot and still have this issue happen, it's server-sided in some cases
