Its a type of temp ban.

Were you joining/leaving games quickly before it happened?
How long has it been going on?

E: also check your task manager just to be sure there are no other programs running associated with d2

only joined 1 game today on classic to get the hell diablo quest
maybe that caused it?

i'd say about 10 minutes but if that is all it is i'll be more patient

Give it 30 mins without logging
If not try an hour, etc.

These ones don't usually last longer than 15 mins

realms went down all of a sudden and some of those who played while this happened got this issue ( me too ) . i ve heard this can last a few minutes up to several days .

If its not a temp ban or realm problem then maybe something like this happened.

Sometimes when I quickly close Diablo 2 and or when I Alt F4 out of Diablo 2 it leaves a diablo 2 process running in the background. This can be fixed by finding the process and ending it. I believe its called game.exe that stays running. Another solution would be to restart the computer.

Open your task manager and see if game.exe is still running in the background, that can also cause this issue
