Is it even worth upgrading the video card on this pc due to the other components being old?

If i decide to tear it apart, what pads or thermal paste should I use? I don't have any.

That's up to you. You can get a better vid card now, and upgrade the rest later...or just do it all now.

As for thermal compound and pads, you'll have to research that, for your particular vid card. Again, there are youtubes for stuff like that.

What game are you playing to get those temps?

In the background in my first screenshot you can see path of exile running.

Well, since I never played POE, that screenshot doesn't mean anything to me. :)

Are you streaming at the same time?

Well, if all you're running is POE on 1080p, and your vid card is hitting 81C with 100% fan speed...then it's running too hot. It's the 100% fan speed that is what worries me.
If it was hitting 81C at 60% fan speed, that would be OK.

GTX 970's are high wattage cards, so they will run a bit hot, but not that hot.

You can either redo the thermal compound/pads or get a new vid card, or get a whole new comp. :)
That's pretty much up to your budget though.

/e If it were me... I'd probably just build a modern computer, and save that one for email/browsing. But again, that's up to your budget. A modern build (good, but nothing fancy) is gonna run $1500 w/o a new monitor.

Use HWmonitor... Open it up run game for like 10 mins and then tab out and screen shot for us.
You have two different applications open reading two different things atm.

For a comp that age, Speccy is fine and accurate.

Maybe but it lacks utilization info.
If it is indeed at 99% utilization 80c is normal.
It also means he needs a new gpu or to dial back the settings.

/edit
Your gpu is throttling (hence the lag spikes), applying new paste may bring down the temp but its still being maxed out.
IIRC POE is also a cpu intensive application so whats the cpu's utilization and temp as well?

/nvm I see it now, overlooked it at first.
Time to dial back settings and or upgrade.
