Hello,

Recently I got into a bit of confusion over the following image I used as an avatar: https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/pokemon/images/0/09/E_123_front.gif/revision/latest/top-crop/width/220/height/220?cb=20120626211921

When I view image info (google chrome), I get the following:

But apparently somebody inspected and saw that it was actually 89kb ~

Can anyone explain which one is the true value and why/how someone else could see a different size? Even when I save the file, it saves as a 45kb file :S

I'm just hoping to educate myself so I can avoid trouble in the future and get the appropriate kb sizes :)

For the record, I did find that reducing that link to part where it ends in .gif; https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/pokemon/images/0/09/E_123_front.gif

Makes a smaller image. So I think I can use that one - but with that said, I want to know if I'm somehow looking at KB sizes wrong because that one shows 16kb for me..

Thanks!

Saving this file will result with the actual file size which is 89 KB and this is the only parameter you can make sure your avatar is within the site limits.

I just saved it and its 89 KB.
Open this
https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/pokemon/images/0/09/E_123_front.gif/revision/latest/top-crop/width/220/height/220?cb=20120626211921
Right click and press save -> get file size of 89 KB.

As for your other part where you said it reduce file size, because if you take the bold part out

The file width and height is 64 pixels while in the original is 220 pixel width and height and hence the file size difference.
If you will use that second link, you should be good, unless theres a redirection in that link to that original image and maybe you should consider in save the reduced file and upload it to imgur for you own use.

I'm assuming that it somehow has to do with the fact that when I save it, it saves as a WebP file, I'm assuming it saves as something different for you.

But if that's correct, doesn't it mean that since JSP is loading it from the web source, which is as a "image/webp" it's loading the 45kb that I'm seeing?

It's not an issue for me to not use it as an avatar, like I said (and you noted) the smaller one should be fine. I just want to make sure I avoid the issue with any future avatars :)

I always suggest to open the link in new tab and then save it or at least check the size there
https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/pokemon/images/0/09/E_123_front.gif/revision/latest/top-crop/width/220/height/220?cb=20120626211921

Try to open this one in a new tab in your browser, save it and you will get 89 KB.
or simply use this link as your avatar
https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/pokemon/images/0/09/E_123_front.gif

if in the future you have doubt regarding file size, feel free to pm me and I will assist you :)

After a little bit of research, it seems that because the file is a WebP file which is google's file type for reducing image size while retaining most of the quality, that the size can vary from browser to browser - At least when you save.

When I save it, it saves as WebP at 45kb, when I save it from Internet Explorer, it saves as an 89kb gif. Very interesting. I guess I will have to avoid WebP images in the future just to make sure ^^

Very weird, ty

webp files can usually be appended with .jpg and opened in your favorite editor. Select all and copy the image, past to new and you'll retain the image without all of the bs, then save in whatever format you like when/if you're done editing. Also, if an image has been saved with high compression, then resaved with less compression it can cause an inflated file size depending on the browser/file manager.

I use a website called tinypng.com to compress images for jsp limits, it crushes the size alot and has very minimal quality loss compared to any other I've tried, can use for

it also labels the original size when you upload for conversion - could be helpful for you

ah my b, I don't think it works for gifs though
