For years now, i've been trying to avoid anything with hydrogenated oil / partially hydrogenated oil due to the trans fat. i'm late to the party, but i just learned the US banned partially hydrogenated oil in 2018, but hydrogenated oil is ok.

is hydrogenated oil just normal saturated fat which i can balance out with unsaturated fat? or does hydrogenated fat contain trans fat?

No. It can't have them bc there's no carbon-carbon double bonds to be cis vs trans configuration. If it's fully hydrogenated, then it's saturated w/ hydrogen, removing all of those double bonds. When partially hydrogenating oils, it produces some trans isomerization bc it is chemically more stable than cis.
